{"id":42,"date":"2009-01-20T09:00:17","date_gmt":"2009-01-20T14:00:17","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/yogawithbarbara.net\/?p=42"},"modified":"2009-01-23T23:34:37","modified_gmt":"2009-01-24T04:34:37","slug":"what-is-yoga","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/yogawithbarbara.net\/?p=42","title":{"rendered":"What is Yoga?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Yoga is over 5,000 years old.\u00a0 It is not a religion, it is a philosophy.\u00a0 Each person&#8217;s practice is as unique as the individual.<\/p>\n<p>In our classes, we practice hatha yoga.\u00a0 &#8220;Ha&#8221; stands for sun, and &#8220;tha&#8221;\u00a0stands for\u00a0moon.\u00a0 Yoga is the joining of the body, mind and the spirit; that which has never been apart.<\/p>\n<p>Central to yoga is the breath.\u00a0 Breathing practices\u00a0I incorporate in\u00a0 classes include Ujahi breathing and Kapalbhati (breath of fire) breathing.\u00a0 Some of \u00a0which involve a sequence of breaths and even\u00a0using alternating nostrils.<\/p>\n<p>I have had many excellent teachers, and am still learning from my yoga experiences of practice as well as teaching and will for the rest of my life.\u00a0 Yoga practice\u00a0is my life and life is my yoga practice.\u00a0 Here are some precepts to consider:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Trust in the infinite wisdom of your body.<\/li>\n<li>If it hurts, it is not yoga.<\/li>\n<li>Yoga is not about judgment, criticism or comparison;\u00a0 leave your ego at the door.<\/li>\n<li>Everyone starts in a different place.<\/li>\n<li>You bring a different body to yoga each time you come.\u00a0 Listen to and honor that body.<\/li>\n<p>If some of these ideas don&#8217;t make sense, that&#8217;s O.K.
